Short-Term Unplanned Medical and Death and Disability Insurance for CERN MPAs
Overview
The Cigna Short‑Term Unplanned Medical Insurance Plan is a private healthcare insurance designed for Associated Members of the CERN Personnel (MPAs) coming to CERN for:
- a short assignment (maximum 90 days within any 180‑day period), or
- multiple short visits, provided the total stay does not exceed 90 days within any 180‑day period.
Not eligible :
- MPAs registered at more than 55%
- Holders of a CERN legitimation card
This insurance plan is strictly personal and does not cover family members.
Coverage
The policy reimburses unplanned and medically necessary medical, hospital, and dental treatments based on reasonable and customary charges in the country of care.
- Maximum benefit: CHF 75,000 per insured person over any 12 consecutive months
Coverage highlights:
- 100 % of reimbursement for hospitalisation and inpatient treatment
- 100% of reimbursement in laboratory exams, when prescribed by doctor
- Up to 600 CHF in dental treatment in any period of 12 consecutive months
- 50% of reimbursement up to 600 CHF in psychiatric reimbursement in a six-month period
- Multilingual TeleHealth Generalist Practitioner Consultations
Capital benefits:
- 10,000 CHF in the event of death
- 75,000 CHF in the event of total and permanent disability
It includes cover for the financial consequences of illness and accidents to the same reimbursement conditions.
Worldwide coverage
Pre-existing conditions are covered in the event of unplanned and medically necessary situations, but not the long-term treatment that could have been foreseen or could wait until return to the home country.
Fulfillement of CERN's requirements
The conditions and benefits of the Cigna Short Solution for CERN MPAs fulfil CERN’s requirements of adequate health insurance cover in Switzerland and France, as well as in any countries visited on duty travel.
The cover provided is not a substitute for local compulsory health insurance in your home country or host country, France or Switzerland. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your health insurance cover is legally appropriate.
Eligibility
To be eligible, MPAs must hold a valid contract of association with CERN and must not hold a legitimation card.
Start and Duration of Cover

Coverage can start up to 5 days before the start date of your CERN assignment
- Coverage can end up to 5 days after the end date of your assignment
- This ensures coverage during travel to and from CERN
Coverage limits:

Minimum duration: 2 weeks
- Maximum duration: 90 days within any 180‑day period
Premiums and benefits :
The monthly premium is 102.50 CHF.
- Premiums are calculated pro rata based on the annual rate.

The daily rate is calculated as follows:
(102.50 × 12) ÷ 365 = 3.37 per day
This daily rate is then multiplied by the number of days of coverage.
Example:
For 20 days of coverage:
3.37 × 20 = 67.40
Payment is currently only available via bank transfer. Credit card payments will be restored in July.
